At American Spine, we believe in utilizing conservative treatments to relieve pain. One of the best minimally invasive treatments for back pain is a lumbar epidural steroid injection. For the procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the injection site. Using fluoroscopic guidance, a American Spine physician inserts a thin needle into the vertebrae of the epidural spine. A dye is injected that allows the physician to confirm the correct location of the needle.
Once the injection location is confirmed, a steroid anesthetic mixture is injected into the epidural space. The medication is applied to help relieve low back pain and radiating leg pain. The procedure should take no longer than 30 minutes. To get the full benefit of the medication, a series of injections may be recommended.
