The surgeons at American Spine are experts at minimally invasive pain management procedures. A lumbar radiofrequency neurotomy helps to eliminate pain to the spine by disrupting pain signals from the medial branch nerves.
Using a local anesthetic and an X-ray or fluoroscope, a cannula (a needle-like tube) is inserted near the affected medial branch nerves. The pain doctor inserts a radiofrequency electrode through the cannula. Once it is confirmed that the electrode is positioned correctly, the electrode is heated and cauterizes the nerve. Once this happens, the nerves do not have the ability to communicate pain signals to the brain, effectively relieving pain. Multiple nerves can be treated using radiofrequency neurotomy.
